Happy birthday to me ....

Sat Jun 13, 2009, 1:16 AM
Ok, guys, here are the (round) figures for the first year :
My 381 deviations ( a bit more than one per day) were viewed 576.000 + times
I got 16.400 + favs
And nearly 1.000 are watching my site...
Thank you for you all, it's been a tremendous experience.
We had a lot of high level debates on several images, and most of you do underdtand what I'm trying to do.
Of course, there are a few idiots here, but much less than in most communities !
What I suffered most is racism. I do like women, all women. All colors.
I shot asians, arabs, caucasians, latinas and african girls. And all kind of "mestizas"...
And I had a few extremly stupid comments about such or such girl. You have to know it.
Secondly, I'm sometimes flamed by very frustrated girls (half a dozen in one full year) that cannot accept to see all my marvelous models so happy in their body and sexuality.
My pictures make them face their own problems and obviously, that's very painful to them.
The funny part of the story is that most of them pretend that they are feminists and that I'm an horrible machist.
If you think about it, you'll understand that showing free girls assuming their sexuality and happy to share is not precisely a machist attitude.
At first I had a doubt about it, but the support of several models havind their site on D.A. and endorsing my work made me understand I was right.
A special thank you to them.
I hope to do much better the next year. More models. More desire. More freedom.
Because you deserve it...
Mateo
PS : I'm gonna clean the gallery and keep only half of the pictures

  • Listening to: Toumani Diabate
  • Watching: My models, mostly
  • Playing: Photoshop
  • Eating: Lasagnes
  • Drinking: Vodka

deviantID

I've been traveling in all western Africa (Mali, Burkina, Senegal, Ivory Coast, Cameroon, Benin, Togo ...) , South America (Brazil, Guyana, Bolivia, Argentina, Chile) and Asia (India, Indonesia, Philipins, Thailand, Malaysia...)
And I learned a big lesson : NUDITY IS TRANSGRESSION everywhere.
In no place in the world, including the most remote primitive islands, full nudity can be tolerated in everyday social behaviour.
So called "naturism" is bullshit. The first thing humanity does when it comes to this step is hiding its genitals...
Having said that, the infinite debate on the topic "is this shooting Art or is it just porn ?"happens to be extremly poor.
Nudes, including the so called "artistic nude"or "academic studies" are transgressions.
My work is even more transgression, because my main topic is not "nudes" but desire, mostly female desire.
And it's a hard one...
Female desire is not tolerated in our cultures.
I guess that's why I receive so many aggresive notes and comments each time I post a deviation.
I really don't mind.
But I guess there are also smart people coming to see my work and I want them to know the meaning of this venture.

Well, I'd also like you to tell me what is art for you.

The concept of art is very vast, and every individual has their own beliefs as to what it is, though I think no matter how many definitions of art there may be, they all have something in common.

A lot of people go with the wrong idea that art always has something to do with "communicating something" or "expressing yourself". A lot of people might tell you this, and they're wrong. You might just paint a picture, or take a photograph without wanting to communicate anything in particular.

What I do think all conceivable definitions or art have in common is the word "aesthetics". Now the real concern doesn't lie in the question "What is art for you?" but rather "What are aesthetics?". It doesn't necessarily have to be beautiful, or pretty, which is a common misconception, but it has to appeal to your senses, not to your pants.

Now more specifically in this case, photography, the least important thing in one photography is pushing the shutter of your camera or making "click". The true photographer is the one that constructed the picture. Whether it is studio photography, journalism photography, nature photography, there is always, if not planning, at least an idea behind a picture. The photographer chooses the focus, the speed, the frame, and most important, the composition of a picture.

In one of your replies to another comment in your profile, you said you tried to make your pictures "crude". In this sense, I really think even YOU admit your pictures are pornography, and not artistic nude. And I'm not talking about the pornography you're thinking about, in which we simply see an exposed vagina and go "Oh, that's porn, that's porn!". No. I'm talking pornography in the way that you are showing things in a crude, exaggerated way, with no respect for boundaries, privacy or intimacy. You are showing things forward, and right in our faces. You are going from a "representation" level to a "presentation" level, which is pretty much what breaks the very fine and fragile line between ART and PORN.

Anyways, that is my answer. Now do with it what you will. I'm sure there are people who will agree with me, and others who will disagree, but this is my way of thinking.
This is a very smart answer.
I do admit you're right when you say:" from a "representation" level to a "presentation" level, which is pretty much what breaks the very fine and fragile line between ART and PORN"
That's exactly why I write that I'm not an artist ( as far as most pictures are concerned).
I always use the "work" word.
Nevertheless, I think you took the "crude" word in a wrong meaning. If I wanted to do more XXX pictures I could, including on D.A. : see the fetish section and you'll agree I'm not by far the most provocative. When I want the picture to be cruder, I'm on the presentation side...
But I'm don't think I'm a pornographist neither. In fact I don't like pornography...
As far as rhe definition of Art is concerned, we basically agree on all.
Except that : "it has to appeal to your senses, not to your pants"
Pants is part of senses.
And it's a major part ...
Thank you for your answer, anyway
Mat
So what exactly are you doing? And I'm proud to know where I stand on the subject, and I'm proud that I'm willing to stand up for that.
By the way, you didn't answer any of my questions.

I am all that is left of the creature that was once me.
Please read my ID and Journal.
I've already answered of all that sort of bullshit
Okay, so you've stated what you're trying to do. Female desire. You call it 'transgression', which by a simple definition is a violation of law, or a sin. Which of itself doesn't make much sense to me. Female desire is not a violation of law, nor is it a sin.
You have not answered why you feel you must post it on Deviantart, when you yourself said what you do, is not art. If you don't want to move forward as a photographer (get feedback and improve your images), why post on an ART site?

If you don't want to answer, stop replying. I've read your ID, I've read your journal, and nowhere is this question answered.

And isn't not bullshit. If you like what you do, and it's on the boundary lines of people's morals, you need to be prepared to defend yourself and what you do with actual reasons that make sense.

Your answer is a little bit confused...
How can you mix the subject and its representation ?
Female desire is not a violation of law, nor is it a sin, of course.
But it's representation is, well, in our culture.
That is what Art is all about : REpresentation, not presentation...

Now your big question : I post because I want to share my work.
At the end of the day, there are very few artists on D.A.
Are you ?
I don't pretend to be an artist, as far as photography is concerned.
My Art is more in the "happening" each shooting is.
Pictures are poor testmonies of them.
But IMHO they are worth sharing.
As long as censors are a ridiculous minority.
Thank you for finally trying to answer my questions.
